17 artist members of the ARA group as well as 8 of its writers are presenting their 5 year anniversary exhibit at the renowned Lyndon House Arts Center this month through October 20th. Our artistic group pays homage to the American farming tradition through visual and written works representing everything from old abandoned farmhouses, landscapes with farm animals, pottery representing often rural farm produced fare, and handmade models of rural structures, to poetry and anecdotal stories about rural life. Also exhibiting is an excellent representation of artistic fiber works entitled TEXTILES: The Sense of Touch in the upstairs galleries.

Our Abandoned Rural America exhibition series is really beginning to take off and get recognition around the state and beyond. Our Plaza Arts Center show in Eatonton went off without a hitch and their large theater was a great venue for our updated ARA video.

The PLAZA Arts Center in Eatonton, GA

The PLAZA's board members, led by Janet Kelhoffer, hosted a very fine opening reception on June 15. It was a very well attended show and visitors were treated to readings by members of the Greensboro Writers' Guild adding another dimension to the art exhibition and ARA movie showing.

Here is a link to my YouTube video of a recent egg tempera painting for the Georgia Writers Museum. I was commissioned to paint the Alice Walker original home when she was growing up in Georgia for the Alice Walker room at the museum.I went to the property in early 2014 and photographed the site for reference material. You will see that, after laying in the initial drawing and adding some color with water soluble colored bars, I began painting in egg tempera. One thing I especially added was the color purple wherever feasible to reflect her Pulitzer Prize winning novel "The Color Purple". You'll notice in the video that, as the painting progresses, I paint over areas and repaint in details and color. This is, since egg tempera is translucent and the layers beneath will influence the topmost layers as time goes by, the painting will actually look richer in the future. I hope that you enjoy viewing the process of painting this special work.

presented by the Madison Artists Guild with its exhibit partner and
host gallery, The Steffen Thomas Museum of Art. This group- exhibit
features paintings, photographs, and a film chronicling the changing
face of rural Georgia as small family farms dwindle in number and are
reclaimed by the forces of nature. Featured artists are Peter Martin
Muzyka, Charles St. John Dyer, Don Jolley and Lisa Wheeler. All four
artists bring their personal perspectives to the theme and reveal unique
stories underlying the inexorable changing landscape of the rural
south.

A treasure in itself, The Steffen Thomas Museum is located in the
very heart of this southern rural landscape and was the logical choice
for the ARA 2 exhibit, having previously opened in Milledgeville. Also
lending its support to the show is the Madison-Morgan Conservancy, an
organization that recognizes the importance of the history and future of
rural Morgan County and the southern landscape in general. The Opening
Reception for this important show was held at the Steffen Thomas
Museum of Art on August 30, 6 p.m., and featured refreshments with a
farmhouse flair and poignant roots music. The exhibit runs through October 27. The museum is
located at 4200 Bethany Road, Buckhead, Ga., 30625. For information on
hours of operation, membership, programs, directions, and future events,
The second of the Abandoned Rural America series is about to have its opening at the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art. The Madison Artists Guild and the Madison-Morgan Conservancy have joined with STMA in sponsoring our updated show honoring the memory of the small family farmer in our country. We have added a new member to out team, photographer Lisa Wheeler, as well as artist and model maker Eugene Swain who is supplying one of his amazing lifelike models of an old family farmhouse for our show's reception on August 30th. After the show opening I will post some of the new works that can be seen (and purchased) at the show which goes from August 30th until October 27th. Here is a link to more information on the show from Karen Strelecki, Arts Outreach Coordinator and Marketing Associate: STMA/ARA2 and below is a copy of our current poster announcing the show. I plan to see you all there at the reception. Please click on the image to make it larger.
I came up for a visit and took a few new photos showing the state of the property in late June 2012. Here is the result.

As you can see, the back side of the house, after the split, has collapsed. The front is leaning to the left and I expect that within a year or so, the entire farmhouse will be just a pile of rubble.

This is one of the buildings on the farm and all is overgrown by weeds and brush dotted with a few Tiger Lilies.

My next post with outline some of the farms that I came across wile traveling through Virginia and Penna in June and early July 2012.

To see more of the old abandoned farmsteads as well as the beautiful landscapes that comprise our eastern United States rural farmland, attend the upcoming Abandoned Rural America 2 show at the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art in Buckhead GA. The opening is August 30th and it will run through the later part of October 2012 with paintings, drawings photos and a video from myself and painter Don Jolley as well as photograhers Charles St John Dyer and Lisa Wheeler.
It has been vacant for decades after the head of the family had passed away. One of his sons moved to the city to pursue his career while the other son lived in a trailer next to the main farm house. The farm itself went into disuse long before the father passed away. I believe that the family, as a whole, lost heart in farming and just gave up in the property. This is the process that i go through when I paint an egg tempera on watercolor paper instead of a gessoed panel. Let me know what you think.

Jewel and I recently went on a little trip to Saint Mary's Georgia and the Okefenokee National Park. I took some additional reference photos for Abandoned Rural America show series along the way as well as flora and fauna in the southern Georgia region.

Here is a short slide video of Okefenokee and I will post another of Saint Mary's later in the week.

I hope that you enjoy the images. Music is by Martin Denny.

Hi All!

Reception only 9 days away!

The show is almost upon us and all of the art pieces are at the gallery. I was fortunate to be able to speak to the Milledgeville Kiwanis 2 weeks ago and then the Milledgeville Civic Woman’s Organization yesterday. There is a lot of interested in these old abandoned farms and I expect to have a lot of folks enjoying the works and the video at the upcoming March 25th reception. There is more about the show here and I’ve posted a little video trailer below. There will be a much bigger and interesting video production shown at the reception. Hope to see you there next Sunday from 1 pm to 3 pm, The Marlor House, 201 North Wayne Street, Milledgeville.

Why I Planned This Show

Throughout my life I have marveled at the beauty of nature, been drawn to the time-worn lines of character in the faces and hands of older folks, was inspired by the mysteries in untamed woodlands and wetlands. When I was a kid growing up in the mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania I would hike for hours in the woods to explore old trails where I would discover old rock structures thought to have been created by Native Americans for shelter. Old farmhouses are kind of like that to me. A wonder of people’s past lives, now devoid of human development, at the mercy of the elements and left to the wiles of nature’s transmutations.

Some of the abandoned farm buildings were built so well that they would last for generations making one wonder why anyone would leave these houses empty and deserted. I can almost feel the spirits of the people who once settled in these rural buildings, visualize the children playing in the yards, husband chopping wood for the fire, wife preparing dinner for the family or working at the spinning wheel or sewing machine making clothes for them all. It occurs to me that the folks settling in these places had hopes and dreams for the future of their families and that they were possibly laying the foundation for future generations of their descendants to have an estate the family will always call their own and then have everything change direction forcing them to desert the homestead forever.

My grandparents came to America from the Ukraine and Russia in the early part of the twentieth century and worked hard to establish such a foundation for the Muzyka family. Unfortunately it didn’t work out that way and each of their children went their own way abandoning the family homestead. This has always affected the way that I view the loss of family ties and the vacant, sad and lonely structures that represent broken dreams. It is often said that the eyes are a window onto the world. I see the windows of these abandoned homes as eyes that have seen the lives of vibrant people gone away leaving behind the spirit of their hopes and dreams.

Various photographs and paintings will be dedicated to showing the rural scene, especially containing old abandoned rural buildings during the 4 seasons. I believe that displaying the beauty of the rural landscape along with the vanishing culture puts an engrossing perspective on the imagery that we might otherwise overlook.

Here are the opening pages to the Seasons section:

Here are the opening pages from the section on abandoned farmhouses outside of Georgia that are part of the exhibit. I:m also considering doing some large (24“ x 48“) posters for the show to be available for sale to exhibit attendees. I'm really interested in feedback on this as it takes a lot of ink and archival paper to produce these large prints and have them mounted to foam board etc. So, if you think that you or a friend may attend and be interested in seeing or purchasing an oversized poster on the show, please send me an email or make a comment on my blog site. Also, all 4 of us (me, Blake Smith, Don Jolley, and Chuck Dyer) would love to get feedback about the exhibit either through this blog or during the exhibit in Milledgeville - March 25- April 20 2012). Copies of the book will be for sale and I plan to include a copy of the DVD video to anyone who purchases a book. Not sure of the price yet but I will post it when it becomes available.

A teaser trailer of the ARA video can be viewed on YouTube here: AbandonedRuralAmerica–trailer
Here's hoping it is a lot more prosperous and uplifting than 2011.
These following pages are from the section of the Abandoned Rural America book about rural Georgia. By no means do they represent all of what is in the book, or images that will comprise the show. The exhibit will have much more imagery and information. If you click on any of these images, they should enlarge on your computer screen.

Here are profiles of the 4 artists included in the Abandoned Rural America show. All of us, like most Americans, have connections to the rural life in our earliest years. This may be a significant factor in our art and photography choices. I've tried to present an insight into our personal lives so that viewers can gain a perspective on our connection to the show elements. Please email me and let me know what you think about this presentation. petermuzyka0@gmail.com
It has been too long since my last blog effort. My time has been wrapped-up doing everything from commercial work to tending to necessary family matters. Now it's time for me to get busy with the important element in my life (besides my wonderful wife and family of course), and that is to work on my painting and art projects.
Part of this is the Madison Artists Guild projects. I've been putting together a newsletter for the past several months with the help of our officers and other members and friends. You can view a couple at our MAG website here. And it's getting close to springtime when we artists in Madison Georgia invite other artists in the region to participate in the annual Georgia in Bloom Art Fest. For those interested in participating or at least visiting the GIB Art Fest you can download a copy of the prospectus below. Or you can email me at peterjewelmz@bellsouth.net for a PDF copy.
See you soon with some new artwork.

One of the most valuable resources that I have discovered on the internet to aid in my egg tempera painting is the website "Pigments Through the Ages". This site is a very comprehensive look at artists' pigments, the history of their use, their manufacture, their properties, toxicity, etc. It even has an interactive page that allows the user to go to a pigment (through a color bar) and it will take you to that pigment's complete analysis pages. I suggest that anyone truly interested in painting should examine this website and those serious about their art should keep this bookmarked on their computer browser. After you examine the pages let me know what you think. I find it exciting and exhilarating to be able to examine artist pigments so carefully. I hope that you will feel the same.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11360345340591349842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5221957799925160037.post-33045493548512433192010-10-12T06:42:00.000-07:002010-10-12T08:24:27.301-07:00A New Painting ApproachPainting with a Knife

As most of my readers know, the painting technique which I am most known for and my preferred way of creating art is with egg tempera. Once in a while I will do pen and ink drawings as finished art and occasionally I will paint in oils or do a pastel painting. I decided to really loosen up on a current painting by working in oils with a painting knife, exclusively. Not as a textural add-on but as a completed work. Being a stickler for glazing technique and a lot of detail, painting an impression of a scene with a knife in a highly textured style was new to me.

Back in June I had taken a seminar in preparing work for high end galleries. The instructor was Jason Horejs from the Xanadu Contemporary Fine Art Gallery in Phoenix, AZ. He had a wealth of helpful and interesting things to say about organizing on

e's work and preparing portfolios etc. but one of the most interesting thing

s that I felt he proposed was, as artists we should study and develop

work in different mediums and styles than we are comfortable with. Not necessarily to change our direction of work but to experience new and interesting ways to produce art. Than when we return to our regular art routine, we can bring new ideas to the table. Now I am preparing to get working on some new egg temperas and hope that experiencing different technique will bring new excitement to my egg tempera creations.

I am including a copy of my painting knife oil along with

an egg tempera so that you can see the difference between the styles with a similar subject. Let me know what you think.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11360345340591349842noreply@blogger.com0
